First years in nursing.

I've been a nurse for almost 5 years now. So it's been a while since I remember my first day. But I can give you the basics. I was nervous, excited, and ready to get started because well . . . . School was over.

I had been a CNA since 2013 and finally graduated nursing school in 2019. I always thought I would stay at my current job up until that point but instead decided to go to a community hospital because I wanted to make a difference.

I was so enthusiastic about it, I walked in all smiles and ready to learn. I remember my first year was a blur. Trying to understand what we learned and apply it in real life. I realized school was really so we could pass the NCLEX and learn the basics.

It wasn't until about my second year that I really understood patients and there diagnosis. Like a COPD patients will come in and get their breathing treatments and steroids and yada yada then go back home and be back during the heat of the summer or the dead of winter or even more depending of various factors. I learned more but I would be going on for days about it. You get the point.

Not only that 2020 was the year the pandemic hit and I was brand new and became a charge nurse on the floor under a year of experience. But my team and manager believed in me. I just needed to learn to do the same.

My advise for now is to take time to learn, give your self some grace. Don't rush because that is when you will make a mistake. Believe me I've had a few close calls, we all have. Ask questions when the doctors are talking if you don't understand. Never assume you know everything. It never gets easier you just learn to deal with the craziness.

Thanks for coming ❤️ Advise from your friendly neighborhood Nurse.

Do I still want to be a nurse?

Of course!!! 😂😂😂 Does it drive me insane when I walk in the door and a patient family member walks up to me, even though I haven't...
