The infamous AMA

If you don't know what AMA is, basically your patient wants to leave against medical advice.
I was one of those nurses that tried to have the patients stay by doing everything in my power to keep them happy. Regardless of it being the food that made them mad, the socks being to rough, the TV channels sucking, or the doctor not explaining the medication they were putting them on in depth.
Listen, there comes a time in your career, where you just say fu** it, here sign the paper and take the IV out.
You CAN NOT and I repeat CAN NOT please them. If they want to leave, one way or another they will leave. Even if you've been taking them ice cream, pudding, fresh ice every hour on the hour, it will be on the next shift.
Some people do actually end up staying, but those people, you know the ones, there is nothing you can do to keep them. They will go and do the same thing that you've beyond educated them about stopping and end up right back. You will learn the signs, don't beat yourself up. It hurts sometimes because it reminds me of people in my life that I wish I could have helped but you can't save everyone. All you can do is be there in the now. You're only one person and what you are preaching to them I promise they've heard a million times.
So give them the paper and get someone in that bed that actually wants and or needs the help.
And this is advice from you friendly neighborhood Nurse
